The problem
Tarapur Industrial Estate in Maharashtra has been identified as a problem area due to severe pollution from chemical industries. Despite the installation of a common effluent treatment plant and drainage to carry and dispose of effluents safely, hazardous waste is still being dumped illegally and there is poor maintenance of infrastructure causing pollution. It has been referred to as one of Maharashtra’s worst industrial estates and the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee has estimated there to be approximately 40,000 tons of hazardous wastes dumped here.Health Impact
